Doctors to Strike for 24 Hours on August 17 in Kolkata Case Protest
Doctors across the country will halt their services for 24 hours on August 17 to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced this strike, starting from 6 a.m. on August 17 until 6 a.m. on August 18, though essential services will continue.
The IMA’s decision follows a violent incident on August 9, when a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead at the hospital. A civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the crime. Additionally, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has questioned five doctors and a police officer regarding the case.
The protest, part of the “Reclaim the Night” campaign, saw chaos late on Wednesday night as a group of men attacked the hospital. They damaged several areas, including the emergency department and nursing stations, and disrupted ongoing demonstrations by junior doctors. In response, police used lathi charges and tear gas to control the situation. Nine individuals have been detained, though West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee clarified that the vandals were not linked to the student protests.
The IMA is calling on the nation to support their cause as they push for justice and better protection for medical professionals.
