Google has unveiled a new feature for Gemini subscribers called “Gems,” allowing users to create and personalize their own chatbots. With Gems, users can name their chatbot, provide specific instructions, and tailor it to meet their needs. This feature is designed to streamline repetitive tasks by saving customized responses for future use.

Gems were first introduced at Google’s I/O event in May and are now available to Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business, and Gemini Enterprise users across mobile and desktop platforms. This paid feature is accessible in over 150 countries and supports more than 30 languages.

For those who prefer not to create their own, Google also offers pre-made Gems. This new offering positions Google to compete with OpenAI’s custom GPTs, which were introduced last year and allow users to build personalized GPTs through the GPT Store.

However, it’s worth noting that Gems cannot generate images and are not compatible with Gemini Live.

In addition to Gems, Google is reintroducing its image generation capabilities for people. The updated feature, powered by the Imagen 3 AI text-to-image generator, will soon be available to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users. This feature had previously been paused due to issues with generating historically inaccurate images. The new Imagen 3 includes enhanced safety measures to address these concerns.

Google’s move reflects its ongoing efforts to enhance its AI tools and keep pace with developments in the field.
