Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Leaked Audio Reveals Early Calls Between Parents and Hospital Staff
An audio clip surfaced on social media Thursday, allegedly capturing the initial phone conversations between the parents of a trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered on August 9 at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and a hospital staff member. While the authenticity of the clip has not been independently verified, it aligns with previous statements from the victim’s parents.
Dr. Arunava Dutta Chowdhury, formerly in charge of the chest department where the crime occurred, revealed that the calls were made by Sucharita Sarkar, a non-medical assistant superintendent. Sarkar, who has been questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has not appeared in public since the incident.
In the leaked recording, the first call reveals a woman informing the victim’s father: “Your daughter is very sick and has been admitted to the hospital. Can you come quickly?” When asked for details, the caller stated, “She is unwell. The doctors will explain what happened. We found your number and are informing you.”
In the second call, the woman said, “She is extremely unwell and in the emergency department. I cannot explain what happened. Only the doctors can provide details. Please come immediately.” When asked for her identity, she said, “I am an assistant superintendent, not a doctor.”
The third call took a grim turn, with the woman stating, “She has probably committed suicide. She may be dead. The police are here. Come as fast as you can.” The victim’s father had apparently kept his phone on speaker for his wife to hear the conversation.
Hospital officials reported that the body was found around 9 a.m. on August 9, while the post-mortem indicated death occurred between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. The victim’s father noted receiving the first call at 10:53 a.m. and two subsequent calls before he and his wife arrived at the hospital.
The parents have previously accused Kolkata police and hospital authorities of concealing information and mishandling the investigation. They declined media inquiries following the release of the audio clips.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata police, was arrested on August 10 as the primary suspect. The case was handed over to the CBI on August 14, following a Calcutta High Court order after the victim’s parents filed a petition. To date, the CBI has not made any arrests.
Soumyadip Roy, a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, criticized the hospital for attempting to cover up the crime and called for a thorough investigation.
